Libya

In a nation where faith can cost everything, the hope of Jesus is taking root. In recent months, we have witnessed a breakthrough two decades in the making: the appointment of our first Field Minister in Libya, where even possessing a Bible can lead to imprisonment.

This milestone represents more than just a new position—it's a beacon of light for the persecuted Christians who have long practiced their faith in shadows in Libya.

The Path of Perseverance

Libya's Christian community, numbering around 35,000 believers, has long walked a difficult path. In this challenging environment, where sharing the gospel is prohibited and converts often face rejection from their families, faith persists in quiet determination. The stakes are life-threatening high—the country consistently ranks among the top three nations for Christian persecution alongside Iran and Afghanistan. Laws mandate that any man wishing to marry a Muslim woman must convert to Islam.

Yet even in these circumstances, hope finds a way forward. For almost twenty years, establishing ministry connections within Libya's borders seemed an insurmountable challenge. However, the Lord made a way for us in 2024 to get into the country...culminating in Aseel's groundbreaking appointment as our first on-the-ground Field Minister.

A Calling Beyond Fear

During her preparation for this role, Aseel faced the stark reality of her calling. One of our other Field Ministers warned her directly about the risks, saying, "Aseel, you might end up in prison if your efforts are discovered." But her response revealed the depth of her commitment—and her unwavering faith in God. "Well, if I end up in prison," she replied, "that's because God put me there. I will trust Him."

Aseel also shared with us something remarkable: In an unexpected turn, while Christian activities face intense scrutiny in daily life, Libya's prisons have become unlikely spaces of spiritual transformation, and Aseel is involved in ministry there. Within these walls, individuals serving time for non-religious offenses often encounter the gospel message because their conversations and religious activities are not measured because they are in prison. Indeed, prisons have become a place of spiritual liberation, and many emerge from their sentences with newfound faith and a desire to share it with others.

Hope Takes Root

Aseel has already begun her vital work, meeting with persecuted believers and providing immediate assistance through Lightning Funds. Her presence offers more than practical support – she brings hope and vital discipleship to those who have long practiced their faith in isolation. Through her ministry, believers find not only material aid but also the precious gift of community and understanding.

The road ahead for persecuted Christians in Libya remains challenging, but we are grateful to God that we are now on-the-ground, ministering to their needs and Rescuing, Restoring, and Rebuilding their lives. As Aseel continues her ministry, we invite you to remember Libya's Christian community in your prayers—for their safety, for their strength, and for the wisdom they need to navigate their faith journey in challenging circumstances.
